Things to do in Thailand’s 5 Phi Phi Islands

The 5 Phi Phi Islands are situated between Thailand’s western coast of the Andaman Sea and Phuket Island. Ko Phi Phi Don – which in Thai language means Phi Phi Island of Don – is the largest island of the 5 and the only one that has a permanent population.

Ko Phi Phi Lee is the second largest and offers many stunning beaches for travelers. The other islands are not famous for their beaches but stand out being humongous limestone rocks standing out of the Andaman Sea:

  • Bida Nok
  • Bida Noi
  • Bamboo Island.

Ko Phi Phi Don

Phi Phi Island Thailand

The main Phi Phi Island used to be one of Thailand’s many simple Muslim fishermen settlements cum coconut plantations.

Nowadays it has been transformed to a thriving tourist destination with many foreign workers replacing the familiar Muslim faces.

The Beach

The second island got famous when it was featured as an idyllic location for the 2000 movie "The Beach". This let to a surge in tourists flocking over to Ko Phi Phi Lee.

Not only the beaches are adorable, you can also visit the Viking Cave, famous for the production of Asian’s expensive birds nests. Drinking the soup makes you even more healthy.

Although much of the infrastructure was destroyed during the 2004 tsunami that hit Phuket, as by today – July 2010 – apart from some religious shrines in honour of those that passed away, Phi Phi Island is again another must visit travel destination in Thailand.
